Dear Members:
Please join your fellow members for
"Past President's Night" November 15, 2006 at the
Tangier Restaurant. Shirley Calvin
Dear Fellow Akron Chapter Members, On December 9th the chapter will be sponsoring an all day professional development seminar. We are currently registering participants. The cost for the event is $95.00 for the full day and $65.00 for half of the day lunch is included. We are limiting the attendance to 80 people. Last year’s event was wonderful. There were a wide variety of speakers and subjects. The feedback from the participants was very positive. We hope that you will take advantage of the offering by the chapter. There is additional information and a registration sheet attached to the newsletter. Another chapter offering is our monthly dinner meetings. Besides having entertaining and engaging speakers with timely subject matters, the networking opportunities are incredible. There have been a number of friendships started at these meetings. You also have an opportunity to discuss with your peers situations you face in your work environment. We have attending members of all ages, backgrounds and experiences. So come to a meeting; there is a very good chance you will meet a future friend, coworker or mentor. The November 15th dinner meeting will be our last sit down dinner until February of 2007. This means that the start of the holiday season will be upon us very quickly. It is sad to say but I have already started to see the Christmas displays in the stores. The first of the holidays is Thanksgiving. This is a time to reflect on what we have and to appreciate those things in our lives for which we are truly grateful.
Sincerely,
Dean C. Hull II

As a leader in corporate accounting, you’ve no doubt
been tapped to provide guidance to staff from time
to time. When these opportunities arise, you can
support team members in one of two ways:
mentoring or coaching. Following is information on
understanding the distinctions between these
approaches, and knowing when and how to use them.
What is mentoring? Mentoring focuses on supporting
a less-experienced professional by serving as an
advisor and sounding board. When working with your
protégé on overcoming challenges and uncertainties,
your goal is to lend an ear, draw upon your
experience and discuss possible solutions.
A case for mentoring: Dan, a recent college
graduate, joined your firm three months ago.
Although the promising new hire is clearly talented,
he’s expressed trepidation about working
with “pushy” supervisors from other departments.
Since Dan is just starting out, he’s seeking a trusted
resource to help him understand the nuances of
cross-departmental collaboration. In a situation like
this, it’s advantageous to mentor Dan by providing
your informed perspective about office protocol,
interpersonal dynamics or an anecdote about
diplomacy.
What is coaching? Coaching is more performance-
oriented than mentoring and concentrates on helping
a person expand specific skill sets. A coaching
arrangement is one in which you help a team member
clarify objectives, assess current productivity levels,
and set defined goals and timelines for improvement.
A case for coaching: Donna has been on your team
for a few years and is interested in moving up the
ladder. However, her inadequate presentation skills
have prevented her from receiving a promotion.
Instead of offering gentle words of wisdom, you’ll
best assist Donna by coaching her on concrete steps
she can take to reach her goal. For instance, Donna
could improve her communication skills – and increase
her odds of garnering a promotion – if she enrolled in
a public-speaking course and refined her
presentation-software skills. In addition to
recommending resources and strategies, you also can
serve as a point person when Donna has questions
about her progress.
Different scenarios call for different approaches. But
regardless of whether you mentor or coach, these
relationships can be mutually enriching. While the
person you advise gains invaluable insight and
knowledge about management accounting, you
further hone motivational skills necessary for
elevated leadership positions.
