    President's Message
    Doreen

    Dear fellow members,
Spring has sprung, or at least the clocks say so. Unfortunately, Mother Nature wasn't told, and Punxsutawney Phil and Buckeye Chuck both got it wrong!
What better way to stay warm than to network with fellow members at our next dinner meeting on Wednesday, March 19th. Akron Chapter member Pat Bianco, from CBIZ Accounting, Tax & Advisory Services LLC, will be speaking after dinner on "The P-Card (Purchase Card) - Keeping it Under Control." Tom Hefty, from Rea & Associates, Inc. will speak before dinner on "Employee Expense Accounts - Can you Spot the Fraud?" I'm sure you will come away with some new information on these topics.
Don't forget the Charity Golf Outing on Saturday, May 3rd. Proceeds benefit the Student Chapters. We are still looking for hole sponsors & prizes. The chapter is a 501(c)(3) charity so your donation is tax deductible. Additional information is in the newsletter or on the website.
We will be presenting the 2008-2009 Board to you next month. We still have a few openings. If you are interested, contact Dean Hull or Becky Price.

    Happy Spring!!

Tips on Managing Generation Y Employees

For the first time in history, four generations spanning a six-decade age range are working together in team settings. And one of the greatest challenges today's leaders face is managing this diverse workforce. While the baby boomers and Gen-Xers have by now become essentially known quantities, employers are still striving to figure out what makes Generation Y "tick." With their unique priorities, perspectives, skill sets and work styles, the Millennials are unlike any group to come before them in many respects.

To gain insight into what motivates and inspires Gen Y, Robert Half International and Yahoo! HotJobs recently commissioned a national survey of more than 1,000 workers ages 21 to 28. Following are tactics based on our findings that you can use to help you better manage these employees:

Remain in close contact. Gen Y grew up with ongoing supervision and validation from parents, teachers and other authority figures. Many will likely look for similar guidance and frequent feedback from you. In fact, 35 percent of Millennial workers want to communicate with their bosses several times a day, while 25 percent want to touch base at least once a day. Gen Yers value timely critiques, open-door policies, advice and candor. Given their communication needs, consider giving periodic "spot reviews" as projects are completed instead of waiting until annual-review time to offer assessments.

Provide learning opportunities. Perquisites such as in- house training opportunities, paid time off to attend professional development events and mentoring initiatives greatly appeal to Gen Y. Because nearly three-quarters of respondents said it's likely they will go back to school to obtain another degree, consider launching (or expanding) tuition-reimbursement programs

Mix it up. Give Millennial workers a range of assignments that enable them to stretch their skills and make an impact. Gen Y grew up with a high level of stimulation, ranging from videogames to the Internet to countless extracurricular activities. The more diverse their jobs, the more likely you are to keep them challenged, engaged and with your organization.

    Golf Outing Update

Fellow members, the chapter is in the process of planning our fourth annual golf outing to support student chapter activity. This year's event will be similar to the three previous events. As always, your support contributes to the success of the event. We realize that not all of our members golf, however, there are other ways to contribute to the event. You can collect gifts to that can be used as giveaways, your company could become a hole sponsor by contributing $50.00, or you could volunteer to cook food or help staff the event.

This year's outing is May 3, 2008 at the Kent State University Golf Course. Registration begins at 7:00 AM and we will tee off around 7:40 AM. It is a shotgun start and we play a four-person scramble. The most important thing is to come out and enjoy yourself. In the past most of our players have been on their way by 1:00 PM.

If you are a golfer please consider playing in this year's event. Most of the people that play in the event are average golfers who enjoy being out on a golf course. Registration forms and additional information is available on the Chapter's web page (Link to Golf).
