    President's Message
    Doreen

    Dear Fellow Members:

Summer is slowly coming to an end, which means that the Chapter will soon be in full swing as we begin to celebrate our 70th year.

The slate of speakers this year is just about complete. Jeff Falter did an outstanding job of getting speakers despite not having a Director of Speakers to help. John Pollara, IMA National Chair, will be the featured speaker in January and we look forward to hearing about how IMA has changed over the years.

The Chapter meetings will again be held at Tangier's Restaurant, with the Student Night's at Kent State University and the University of Akron held on campus. See the program booklet or website for the dates and places of those meetings. If you haven't been to a Chapter meeting in a while, come see what it has to offer in the way of networking. You can still earn CPE even if you choose not to eat. The speaker starts at 7:10pm so make sure you make it to one of the meetings this year. And if you can't, don't forget the Professional Development Seminar in December.

Chris (Guest) Schneider will be leaving the board in September. She is currently Director, Technical & Board Meetings, Facilitator & Attendance. If you are interested, please contact Dean Hull (deanhull@sbcglobal.net) or myself (doreenkuster@yahoo.com). This is a critical position on the Board and I hope you will consider volunteering.

    See you next month!

    Classroom Leader Search

The IMA Akron Chapter is putting together a Teaching Team for the upcoming CMA Review Program starting at the University of Akron in September 2007.
The team will be led by Wendy Tietz, CMA/CPA - Department of Accounting Kent St. University and IMA Akron Chapter Board Member (Director of Student Relations) which allows us to invite interested individuals who do not currently have the CMA designation to join the teaching team.
With the start of the Fall semester quickly approaching, we are actively searcing for those of you who are interested to join the team! The program is administered by the University of Akron Workplace Development and Continuing Education Division. It will utilize the New Version 2.0 release of the CMA Learning System launched by IMA National in June, which includes a completely enhanced and improved Instructor preparation package. The Teaching Team is a new concept being implemented this year to provide support and assistance to the classroom team as well as reducing the burden and commitment on the individual classroom instructors to provide the participants with the resources they need to pass the exam successfully on the first attempt.

Classroom leaders will also earn CPE hours for their certification requirements.

    Resolving Staff Personality Conflicts

Do you feel like you spend much of your workday attempting to sort out interpersonal issues between members of your accounting staff? If so, you've got company. In a recent Accountemps survey, senior executives were asked this question: "What percentage of time is wasted resolving staff personality conflicts?" The mean response was 18 percent - almost a fifth - of a managers' time

As a group leader, it's critical to prepare for conflict and nip it in the bud when it arises. Left unchecked, differences in employees' temperaments, abilities and work styles can damage morale, decrease productivity and lead to departmental disharmony. Following are tips for diffusing conflict and fostering a friendly and collegial environment:

Know when to intervene. Even the best employees occasionally have their moments; and minor tiffs can likely be resolved without your assistance. If you notice that two staffers frequently butt heads, however, step in and call a meeting. Listen objectively to their respective concerns and help them find a workable resolution. While you should guide the discussion to get to the root of the discord, make it clear that it is their responsibility to prevent distracting disputes in the future.

Put problem employees in their place. It's important to step in and take corrective action quickly and assertively if a someone on your team is exhibiting negative behavior, such as undermining colleagues, spreading rumors or failing to contribute to team initiatives. Pull the offending party aside privately and inform him or her that the ability to collaborate and treat coworkers with respect is a core requirement of the job. Acting quickly to deal with difficult employees will go a long way toward keeping adversarial personalities in check and maintaining a pleasant work environment.

Offer positive reinforcement. Shining the spotlight on your office's best team players is another smart move. Consider doling out praise and choice assignments to individuals who possess the qualities you want others to emulate. Doing so will send the message that you value professionals with well- developed people skills.

Even if you supervise a team that generally gets along well, you'll occasionally need to address complaints and referee disagreements. By remaining attuned to your staff and not being afraid to face interpersonal issues when they surface, you can mitigate conflict swiftly and effectively.
