Dear Members:
Please join your fellow members for Student Night
on April 18, 2007 at Kent State University Student
Center. Shirley Calvin
Dear Fellow Members: This month’s dinner meeting will be held at Kent State University. We have two more wonderful speakers scheduled for the meeting. The speakers are Marilyn Deisner and Patrick Bianco. There are two other major events coming up in the near future. The first is the 33rd Annual Meonske Professional Conference being held at Kent State on April 26th and 27th. The second is our third annual golf outing to benefit our student chapters. The Meonske conference committee has put together another outstanding roster for this year’s event. Thursday will now be a full day for all of those in attendance. In addition to the ethics class in the afternoon, there will be another session available. Friday’s slate of speakers may be the best group compiled to date. Last year there were over 220 registrants for Thursday and Friday was sold out again. If you are planning on attending get your registrations in early. I hope to see as many of you golfers as possible at this year’s outing. We moved the date back 3 weeks in an attempt to try and get better weather, although you would be hard pressed to beat the day we had last year. We will again be playing at the Kent State golf course on May 19th in the morning. If you don’t golf, please tell your friends that do golf. If you want to help you could volunteer, donate money or a gift(s) for the event. It is our volunteers and sponsors that truly make this event successful. We are still looking for a few more members to join the 2007-08 board. If you have an interest in becoming a board member please contact Diana Saulino. Also if you have any topics you would like to see scheduled for the up coming year please let Doreen know. The 2007-08 planning meeting will be held in early June.
Sincerely,
Dean C. Hull II

If you’re planning to augment your staff soon, a big
question will be who has more leverage in the current
job market- employers or job seekers? Based on a
new survey, it appears the tide is turning in the favor of
candidates.
The Employment Dynamics and Growth Expectations
(EDGE) Report from Robert Half International and
CareerBuilder.com suggests that the hiring
environment has changed. While employers were in
the driver’s seat earlier in the decade, the pendulum
has now shifted back to job seekers. The study
annually explores employment, hiring and
compensation trends from the perspective of both
hiring managers and employees in an effort to gauge
who has the advantage in the job market.
Companies are currently confronting the dual
challenge of impending baby boomer retirements
along with a shortage of workers to replace them.
Hiring managers are having more difficulty finding
skilled applicants and are increasing starting salaries
and offering bonuses to attract these individuals,
when it is possible. As a result, talented job seekers
with in-demand skills are finding more opportunities
to choose from and have more leverage when
negotiating compensation packages. Following is a
closer look at some of the survey findings:
While salaries are on the rise at many firms, money is
not everything to prospective employees. Forty-five
percent of workers surveyed view health insurance as
the most important benefit, while 24 percent cited
flexible work hours. If you are working with tight salary
budgets, you can still compete for top accounting
talent by heralding other benefits you provide.
Excellent health coverage and perks such as
telecommuting options, training opportunities and
employer-matched retirement-savings plans can add
significant appeal to job offers.

While reading through the January 15-19, 2007 Ohio
Society of CPAs e-Weekly Bulletin, I noticed that
several Akron chapter IMA members were past
winners of the Outstanding Ohio Accounting Educator
Award: Thomas Calderon (2006 - University of Akron),
Michael Pearson (1999 - Kent State University), Ray
Stephens (1995 - then Kent State University, now Ohio
University), and Orville "Bud" Keister (1988 - University
of Akron). Congratulations Thomas, Mike, Ray and
Bud!
